An ok book. i like the original plot and that the girl that he likes sees through the illusion and doesn’t notice him when he is popular. some good ideas and a good short read. not a contender for the award though. 6/10
I rather quite liked the whole story line (plot) of this book. As it happens it’s a plot I have read before. If you have not read anything like this, it is a great short read. But if, like me, you have read something simmilar before, the only saving grace for you is Boyce’s style which, like marmite, is love/ hate, so if you dislike his style this is a bad book for you

cons-not original, style is love hate
This is a book about a boy called George. He is one of those people that other people don’t want to hang around with. On his birthday, he asks his friend to come over, but even he doesn’t want to hange around with him; so it’s only him, his mum & dadand his Grandad. His Grandad gives him a bottle of aftershave that GEORGE’S MUM GAVE TO HIM WHEN SHE WAS LITTLE! – She says that they should put it in the bin as it’s WAY past it’s sell by date. Little does she know that the aftershave can change George’s life forever. One day, he puts some of the aftershave on and for some strange reason, everyone wants to hange around with him.
I really enjoyed this book and even though it’s a short read, it’s a good read!
it is short and wonderful and good .it tells u what people did to become famous but not better than blood ties
desirable was a good book it was about a boy who thought that being popular was the best thing that could happen to him, but he finds out that he was wrong, that when you are being popular, you can not have your own life
Great book!!! It was about a boy named George who, let’s just say isn’t the most popular boy in the school. On his birthday no-one apart from his family went to his party! But then George receives a mysterious aftershave from his grandfather and as soon as he opened it, birds start singing, the sun shines brighter and… girl’s become attracted to George- including the female teachers! Only one girl isn’t attracted to George and doesn’t care what aftershave he wears. However, teh aftershave bottle breaks and the smell wears off. What will happen to all the ladies George had and will he be able to find the same aftershave called Desirable which was made way before he was even born?!
This is a really good book . Most people wouldn’t think so because it’s not got many pages but in the few pages it has a lot has been crammed into it . An easy and enjoyable read and I would recommend it highly.
George is unpopular. It’s his birthday and even his ‘closest’ – and only – friend doesn’t want to come to his birthday party in fear of his reputation! Even his granddad blows him out and instead goes to get his hair cut, leaving poor George with an old bottle of aftershave, way past its sell-by-date.
But George takes it in a positive manner, thinking maybe it was like wine or something – the longer you leave it, the better it gets. A smart move.
Because as George opens the bottle, the world is alive – birds singing, dogs barking, the sun vibrant, illuminating the atmosphere. With a just a dab of it, George is pleased. Perfect Paula wants to walk him to class; Perfect Paula who makes an excuse to comment on him, his clothes, his luminous yellow backpack, EVERY day. And, then all the girls want to sit next to him. Even the head wants to make him hot chocolate! But, then it gets out of hand, as Tiny and some others try to steal the bottle and it all leaks out. And Daniella, the girl he originally wanted to impress, doesn’t want to know because he’s changed. He’s not the same boy she had a (secret-) crush on anymore.
I thought this was a good read. It was quick and taught a valuable lesson. It also made me laugh out loud in some parts. But, I would really recommend this book to about 8-11 year olds’.
Desirable by Frank Cottrell Boyce
This book is about a boy called George who is very unpopular. He has no one to sit with at lunch and the only person he ever talks to are the teachers and Tiny in Warhammer club. Then one day his grandpa gives him a bottle of aftershave for his birthday. He dabs it on and suddenly everyone wants to eat with him or come to warhammer club with him. Then his bottle is smashed and everyone goes back to hating him…apart from one.
I would recommend this book to 7-10 year olds.
I liked this book, although i think that it would be suitable for KS3 children! I think this book tells you that you should just be yourself sometimes. Then when you are popular they will like you for who you are and not because of the aftershave you wear!!!!!!!!
