I really disliked this book as it was so immature but then again the competition is for 11 year olds too... it was quite short and not very descriptive. i would recommend it to younger readers but never to anyone 12+

First impression: desires, magic, childish, f=great name, looks interesting, aftershave and relationships.
After reading: Plot- It could have been a really good story if it was longer, it could gave gone into more depth and it could have become an action thriller or a romantic comedy. It wasn’t really exciting 3 out of 5!
Characterisation- The characters weren’t really described that well so they weren’t very believable. George was a nice person but not popular, that all I was able to grasp. They spoke in a very simple style which was perfect for their background. 2 out of 5!
Language/writing style- The name is really good but the story was mostly boring. I read it in the shortest time I’ve ever read a book (45 mins), it had illustrations which were nice but again it was BORING. The vocabulary was ok for the sort of book it was. 3 out of 5!
Appeal- It was fun at some points but it was mostly immature and kind of annoying too. I didn’t really enjoy the story. It’s aimed at a low ability age group because e of the vocabulary and the structure of the book. 2 out of 5!
Overall the grand total is 10 out of 20!

This book made me laugh so much. I had a bit of humour and some sad parts as well. I love the fact that his grandad doesn't want to speak to him nad is ashamed of him so just gives him an old bottle of aftershave which he recieved as a present some years ago. The storyline was very good, althogth short. I like the fact that near the end of the book, George didn't like all the attention so passed the aftershave onto someone else. This made us realise that you can really want something, but when you get it, it doesn't seem as good as it did before when you didn't have it. To make this book better, i think it could have been a bit longer and had a more complex storyline. Altogether this book made me laught the most as it had things we were supposed to laugh at, and things which were sad which we shouldn't laugh at, but still do.

Even though this book is actually very small, it's packed with a very interesting story. When George's Grandad gives him a bottle of aftershave called Desirable, the girls suddenly in school like him and even the headteacher cannot ressist him. I think he should have tried it but not take the advantage of it. 8/10

This book is great for children. The characters are good. I think that everyone could read this and would enjoy it. It may be not in the top 6 but it is a fantastic book and I voted for it . It is great how George has the special aftershade and all the girls start to like him and i think he should be greatful to his grandad for giving it to him. Also everyone wants to come to his party even Kylie. It's a happy ending

An ok book. i like the original plot and that the girl that he likes sees through the illusion and doesn't notice him when he is popular. some good ideas and a good short read. not a contender for the award though. 6/10

I rather quite liked the whole story line (plot) of this book. As it happens it's a plot I have read before. If you have not read anything like this, it is a great short read. But if, like me, you have read something simmilar before, the only saving grace for you is Boyce's style which, like marmite, is love/ hate, so if you dislike his style this is a bad book for you

14-20
cons-not original, style is love hate
