Creative Writing Pack

You picked the winner as readers. Why not let them now inspire you as writers?

Fancy having a go yourself?

The Creative Writing project is a partnership between Manchester Libraries and ACWE, Manchester Metropolitan University’s Association for Creative Writing and English.

Fran Kern, a Manchester-based freelance writer, member of ACWE and avid reader designed these resources for you to use with your groups.

Below is everything your teacher, librarian, or reading group leader will need to start and run your own creative writing workshops based on this year’s short listed books.

To get started choose a book from the finalists of the Manchester Book Award 2008

  • Girl, Missing by Sophie McKenzie
  • Being by Kevin Brooks
  • Do The Creepy Thing by Graham Joyce
  • The Devil's Breath: Danger Zone by David Gilman
  • Nemesis by Catherine MacPhail
  • Berserk by Ally Kennen

A message from Fran

Fran Kern

Hello. I’m Fran, and I’m a writer that visits schools. Before setting off and starting your own creative writing workshops, I thought I’d share some of my tips for running great workshops:

Teaching high school students everyday no doubt requires a different mind-set (and stamina!) to running writing workshops, so the individual books’ guidance notes are geared towards letting adults take off their teacher-hat and try on my writer-hat for a change (at a rakish angle, no less).

Like a personal trainer, I normally get to know a group and find out what they’re interested in and want to learn before designing their exercises; so, spelling everything out like this for people I’ve not met to is new to me.

None of it is written in stone: every group dynamic is different – and you have the advantage actually knowing your participants – so please make notes and alter and amend away!

For inspiration, read about the anthology Newall Green High School created in 2007 for the Manchester Book Award.
